Rare Winchester Store 5 Panel Window Sign Display Trap Shooting Model 12 Shotgun
It was used during the 1920’s in store windows of Winchester Stores, Winchester Repeating Arms own line of hardware stores. This panel set advertises Higher Trapshooting Scores. The release date was April 1, 1920. Panel sets, consisting of five 40″ x 19″ panels, were introduced in March 1920 and continued through approximately 1928. Originally printed on one side of the thin cardboard panel Winchester quickly saw the economy in printing on both sides and double sided panels were introduced in September, 1920. The scenes on each side of the panel were targeted for display during specific weeks designated by Winchester. Each panel was made to be slipped into a wooden five panel frame, also supplied by Winchester. It appears that Winchester produced at least 29 one sided sets and 47 two sided sets. The best reference book on this subject is the Winchester Rarities by Tommy Webster and David Kowolski. Some of the sets that I have for sale are pictured in this book and identified in the description. I typically show photos of one or both sides of the panel set from that book when possible. Some of the panel sets I have for sale were not shown in the book as they were not available at the time of publication. The panel sets are colorful and present a breathtaking image when arranged in order. The individual panels are fragile due to the lightweight construction. Edge damage from inserting and removing from frames is common but such damage is typically hid from view by the wood frame. Those that are not on foam core should be protected as such for preservation. Or displayed in a frame if you have one. Description of this panel sets significance from the owners’ web site is as follows. (April 1-7, 1920)-This is 4th Winchester 5-panel set ever produced and I think its in the top (5) for great design and collectibility. This is very early (1920), so only one-sided and it shows a Great scene of a vintage TRAP LINE, from the “TRAP HOUSE” to the “TRAP LINE”. Besides the very prominent M-12 in the foreground, it also is advertises Winchester “Leader” and “REPEATER” shotgun shells. This same scene is used on other Winchester advertising pieces. This in MINT condition, no restoration of any kind, bright colors, no tears, no tape, no nothing! Yes, this was used in the publication of the Winchester “RARITIES” book and can be seen on p. Unless noted the items listed are original and not restored, not reprints. Please bookmark my site and check back throughout the coming months. This item is original without restoration of any kind. The panels are sandwiched between lightweight pieces of plywood for protection, a method I have used successfully many times over. The item “Rare Winchester Store 5 Panel Window Sign Display Trap Shooting Model 12 Shotgun” is in sale since Tuesday, November 15, 2016. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Advertising\Merchandise & Memorabilia\Store Displays”. The seller is “nce1″ and is located in Duluth, Minnesota. Description of this panel sets significance from the owners’ web site is as follows. (July 13-19, 1922)- a very rare Winchester 5-panel set-(complete). Yes, this is the one from the Winchester “RARITIES” book-pp. Tommy didn’t even have this set, its rarely found intact with all 5 panels! (Side-#1) Titled “RIFLES and AMMUNITION”-The center three individual panels feature a. 401 Auto-loading RIFLE, a Model-95 and the best of all, a very desirable panel showing the “MODEL-94″. Each end panel shows METALLIC AMMUNITION for these RIFLES and what is really rare (Ammunition for the Winchester Model-86). THIS IS THE ONLY 5-PANEL SET THAT FEATURES ANYTHING ABOUT THE WINCHESTER MODEL-86! Panel#1-For Self Loading RIfles. 22 automatic. “FOR MODEL-95 Rifle”. 30 ARMY. 30 Gov’t’06. Note-this is one of the very FEW 5-panels sets made exclusively for “BIG GAME”, it mentions DEER, MOOSE and BEAR! Panel#5-for MODELS 94, 92 and 86.32-40. Again, each panel (on both sides) has the red “WINCHESTER” in STAGGERED SCRIPT LETTERS, making each panel a Prime candidate for use in different Winchester collections. (Side-#2)-is interesting in that it features 5 different Winchester FLASHLIGHTS or BATTERIES, including a GIANT Picture of a 1923 SPOT-LIGHT model with a CURVED LENS and another with a cutaway Winchester BATTERY. In total MINT CONDITION, no restoration of any kind! Very, Very rare in its complete form, another of the top “10” panels. At the present time, at least TWO PANELS will appear in the new M-95 book! I note that there is some reflective flash in my photographs from lighting. This is not fading. The colors are true and vivid. There is some light staining and edge wear on the panels and seen in the photos. This panel set is not mounted on foam board. Unless noted the items listed are original and not restored, not reprints. Please bookmark my site and check back throughout the coming months. This item is original without restoration of any kind. (side-#1)-Titled “CHRISTMAS DISPLAY”- shows a GIANT (3) center panel scene of a BIG RED SANTA and bag over-filled with Winchester gifts. It is indeed the most charming and sentimental of all the Winchester (5) panels and is a top “10” for sure. In the bag I see a very rare SCOOTER, M-90, Hockey Stick, Pocket Knife, Boxing Gloves, Plane, Basketball, two GOLD Scissors, full box of bits, a razor strop and a rare KITCHEN KNIFE SET. The only problem is this is so rare that only a few of the really dedicated Winchester advertising collectors know of its existence. The end panels are sometimes seen, they each show a long list of WINCHESTER STORE gift ideas, including some WJRC (Winchester Junior Rifle Corp) items. (Side-#2)-Titled ICE SKATE DISPLAY-shows a neat Winchester ICE SKATES on each panel, In MINTY condition. I note that there is some reflective flash in my photographs from lighting. This panel set advertises the Winchester Junior Rifle Corp and. 22 target rifle shooting. The release date was December 26, 1920. The reverse side of the panels, not shown in the photos, depict kitchen knifes. See the photo of the panel set from David Kowolski’s book, Winchester Rarities, to see that side of the panels. This reverse side was designated for use in January 1921. The Winchester Junior Rifle Corp was started by Winchester in the late 1910’s to promote youth shooting a concept very foreign in today political correct society! Youth enlisted in local clubs at schools! , scout troops, churches, etc. To learn to shoot and compete for medals as they improved their scores. Of course the use of Winchester rifles and ammunition was heavily promoted in the process. And the youth grew up using Winchester which they carried into adulthood. Today WJRC items are quite collectible and highly sought by Winchester and memorabilia collectors. The best reference book on this subject is the Winchester Rarities by Tommy Webster and David Kowolski. Some of the sets that I have for sale are pictured in this book and identified in the description. I typically show photos of one or both sides of the panel set from that book when possible. Edge damage from inserting and removing from frames is common but such damage is typically hid from view by the wood frame. Those that are not on foam core should be protected as such for preservation. Or displayed in a frame if you have one. This panel set is in pretty good condition. There is the typical edge damage that occurred from inserting and removing the panels from the wood frames. The colors are excellent. There are a few paint splatters in the upper right corner of the first, most left, panel. Unless noted the items listed are original and not restored, not reprints.
