MODEL B-33 ELECTRIC HIT & MISS STEAM ENGINE. When I was a kid, we had these engines. The poorer kids had the manually-fired ones with charcoal or sterno-fired boilers, and we resented the rich kids who had the electrically-heated boilers that they could just plug in. Ours were messy, and you had to wait for the boiler to get “fired-up”. So, when I first bought this engine (along with a few peripheral parts-see my other auctions) I was mystified when I examined it. There WAS no “boiler”! When I looked it up on a collector site, they said that this model was likely made as a hobby-shop or toy store window dressing, pumping away and spinning various tools continuously, without having to keep an eye on boiler water levels. With a transformer a several sets of points, it chugs away just like a “real” steam engine. The cast-iron base measures 7″ by 11″. This engine DOES work, with a little “help” to get it moving. It needs a good cleaning of all it’s parts (including the points) and a good lubing to run trouble-free. This is an original Revell USS Essex Air Craft Carrier built as a store display by Revell. It is in remarkable condition for its age. It was mounted and painted by Revell for hobby shops. A few items could be missing, couple planes and pennants. Paint is still very nice, obviously could use a cleaning but I have left it original. This model was on display at the hobby shop in Cameron Village, Raleigh, NC. Eastern Air Lines ordered 40 188As. Size: 28 inch wingspan, 29 inches long. The Lockheed L-188A (Lockheed # 188A1007) Electra is an American turboprop airliner built by Lockheed. First flown in 1957, it was the first large turboprop airliner built in the United States. Initial sales were good, but after two fatal crashes that led to expensive modifications to fix a design defect, no more were ordered. With its unique high power-to-weight ratio, huge propellers and very short wings (resulting in the majority of the wingspan being enveloped in propwash), large Fowler flaps which significantly increased effective wing area when extended, and four-engined design, the airplane had airfield performance capabilities unmatched by many jet transport aircraft even todayparticularly on short runways and high field elevations. [citation needed] Jet airliners soon supplanted turboprops for many purposes, and many Electras were modified as freighters. Some Electras are still being used in various roles into the 21st century. The airframe was also used as the basis for the Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft. American Airlines was the launch customer. Eastern Air Lines, Braniff Airways and Northwest Airlines followed. Production ended in 1961 after 170 had been built. This is the original, not a reproduction. The sign is 2-sided, there is a hole at the top for hanging. It looks like something has been neatly trimmed off the bottom of the display (I’m not sure what this was, but the bottom edge is slightly uneven) when it was repurposed as a decoration. It measures about 11.5 inches tall, and about 5.25 inches wide on the base. It has a few scuffs, stains, marks, and tiny surface pulls, and pin holes at the top and bottom where it was hung up. There are stress marks/light creases and a small tear where the base meets the bottom of the mummy’s legs. One side is in better condition than the other, the “worse” side has yellowed tape residue near the hanger and the right hand, war around the hanger, and a few spots on the black base where some white scuffs have been touched-up with black ink.
