Founded in 1917 in Clarinda, Iowa, the Parris-Dunn Corporation initially gained recognition for its wind generators and other mechanical innovations. In 1934, they introduced wind generators based on the patented “Slip the Wind” governing principle, designed by co-founder William Dunn. This innovation allowed the blades to pivot and tilt, protecting the windmill from damage during high winds by reducing the force exerted on the blades. Parris-Dunn wind generators were particularly popular throughout the 1930s and early 1940s, serving as a reliable source of electricity for rural areas before widespread electrification. Though the demand for their wind generators declined with the expansion of rural electrification, Parris-Dunn’s legacy in innovative mechanical design remains significant. This model, though unmarked, reflects the quality and ingenuity for which the company was known.
