This is a vintage Sony “ON AIR” illuminated studio sign, believed to have been manufactured in Japan around 1979. Once used in professional broadcasting environments or as promotional displays, this rare Sony product is highly prized for its distinctive retro design. When illuminated, the large white “ON AIR” lettering and Sony logo stand out against the red front panel, making it a striking accent piece for a studio, office, shop, garage, or collection room. Due to its age and limited availability, finding a unit that still functions properly is extremely difficult today. It has been tested, and the internal light illuminates correctly. Signs of aging and use are visible across the exterior, including noticeable scratches, scuffs, paint loss, dirt, and discoloration. The red front panel shows scratches and surface scuffs; there is significant paint wear, particularly along the top and bottom edges. As shown in the photos, there is an area of?? surface paint loss caused by a scratch, as well as a small dent, near the top center of the front panel. The black metal housing also shows numerous scratches, scuffs, dust, and general signs of use. The label and pads on the back show signs of aging, cracking, dirt, and discoloration.
